Seth Thomas Wales

Presented for your consideration is this Seth Thomas "Wales" City Clock circa 1904.

This clock has been completely overhauled and restored.  It is ready to provide years of melodic, reliable mechanical time and strike operation.

It features a case with the original rich brown mahogany stain finish, accented with classic lines and dentil molding.   The case measures 10 3/4 inches in height, 8 1/2 inches in width and approximately 6 inches in depth.  It would fit in just about anywhere.   The original Seth Thomas 48R 8-day keeps great time and strikes the hour and half-hour on a coiled cathedral bell, or gong. It has a 5-inch convex white porcelain dial, French sash with convex beveled glass.

The Wales has a distinctive dentil molding around the top molding and can be found on page 212 of Tran Duy Ly's reference book "Seth Thomas Clocks & Movements" Third Edition.

The following work was done to service and restore this clock:

  1. Complete disassembly.
  2. Ultrasonic cleaning and inspection.
  3. Polished and burnished all pivots.
  4. Bushed all worn pivot holes with high quality brass bushings as needed.
  5. Pegged all remaining pivot holes.
  6. Hand cleaned and inspected existing mainsprings.
  7. Reassembled movement and lubricated Movement and Mainsprings using high-quality synthetic clock oil and grease.
  8. Fully bench tested for one week.

  1. Disassembled with thorough cleaning and inspection.
  2. Amalgamated the existing shellac finish, retaining all of the original stain and a thin layer of the existing shellac.  Applied several extremely thin coats of new shellac over old using the French Polish technique.
  3. Replaced missing pendulum with a salvaged geniune, antique, model appropriate Seth Thomas Pendulum.
  4. Applied two coats of specially formulated paste mixture of high-quality bees and carnuba waxes.
  5. Hand polished four brass feet, coated with high-quality cellulose lacquer and applied self-adhesive felt pads after reassembly of case.

Bezel and Dial:

  1. Carefully hand cleaned porcelain dial.  Please note that there is a small chip on the edge of the dial radial to "7".  You can barely see it under the sash.  See listing photo and/or contact for more details.
  2. Fabricated two new solid brass grommets to help protect the porcelain enamel around the winding arbor holes
  3. Hand cleaned and polished brass bezel and sash.
  4. Applied two coats of high-quality cellulose lacquer to brass.
